Tom cutting a piece of steel down to size so it is the perfect fit for the cut through into Cat’s bedroom, from the old to the newer side of the house. This is the cut through with the ‘floating’ wall… Tom has already cut a channel for the steel plate to sit in and… Continue reading OMG the dust…

Another day in paradise
Tom started the morning with corner number two. The corner where the staircase is on one side and the old bathroom is on the other side. This wall has some very large cracks, along with stone that is crumbling away and the bottom has a thick layer of concrete that we cannot remove by hand.… Continue reading Another day in paradise
All four corners
Tom has all four corners of the house to strengthen and repair. After our discovery of the earlier steeper roofline, we now know why the corners of the walls are cracked and crumbling away. They were built at a later date, but very badly and with small bits of stone, not large coursed stone, and… Continue reading All four corners
Vertigo and cake
Weekend visitors coming to work on the house and bringing homemade birthday cake are most welcome! Sally and Laura popped by to take a look at the derelict house, and our older sister, Lucy, came to stay for the weekend and help, the first time we have seen her since Christmas. Cat and Laura being… Continue reading Vertigo and cake
Dust + rain = mud, oh the glamour
It’s been such a grim week with the rain, that the dust in and around the house is turning to mud. And the dust is truly EPIC. You just have to look at the house and you are covered, everything in the house is caked in it. Our structural engineer, Martin, arrived this morning to… Continue reading Dust + rain = mud, oh the glamour
What on earth is this?
More exciting discoveries today! This, whatever it may be, was discovered in Zanna’s bedroom. Obviously they are shelves, the top one is just like the other cubby holes we have found elsewhere in the house, but the one underneath is puzzling us… It appears to be stone, but could be concrete (although unlikely). It looks… Continue reading What on earth is this?

Snapshots of history
Every time we do any work on the house we inevitably find pieces of newspaper, very handily as we can then date the part that we are removing. We can date all work that was done to the house to 1897, 1929, 1939, 1941, 1950, 1952, 1974 and 1981. This gives us a fascinating insight… Continue reading Snapshots of history
Timber!!!
Today was timber themed. It began with Dan uncovering another stunning beam at the foot of the A-Frame. This is the landing wall where the attic staircase will be. This beam will support the new steel beam which will sit on top of a pad stone. This steel will span the middle of the building… Continue reading Timber!!!
We found a hidden window!
This morning all the ceilings were taken down exposing the full attic space and it looks incredible. A few more horrors have been revealed, but we’ve also just discovered an old window in the gable end that has been blocked up! You can just see the blocked up window in the middle of this photo,… Continue reading We found a hidden window!
